Steve Horn to Speak at SAFE Anti-Fracking Event
Steve Horn, Research Fellow for DeSmogBlog, will be the keynote speaker at The Fracking Truth. This event, presented by SAFE (Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing our Environment) is expected to build support for state bill SB1418–a moratorium on high-volume fracking in Illinois.
Steve previously was a reporter and researcher at the Center for Media and Democracy, and his writing has appeared in The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The Nation, Truth-Out, and other outlets.
Steve will speak about how the shale gas/oil industry—with a helping hand from groups like ALEC, the Council of State Governments, and Big Green group Environmental Defense Fund—has used the regulatory framework as a weapon to push through its agenda, blocking federal regulations, gutting zoning laws, and helping to ensure an underfunded state-level regime that is incapable of effective regulation. He will also provide different avenues activists have been taking to fight back against this regime, including pushing “Nature Bill of Rights” legislation and bills that criminalize hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.
The Fracking Truth will be held at the Carbondale Civic Center on March 1, 7pm.
